The Last Days of a Reluctant TyrantPosted: 27.05.2009
Be the first to see Tom Murphy’s latest play at the world premiere of The Last Days of a Reluctant Tyrant at the Abbey tonight (May 27th). Marie Mullen takes the lead as the controlling matriarch Arina, in this darkly humorous tale of twisted morality and a disintegrating family. This is the seventeenth play that Murphy has premiered at the Abbey: his earlier successes have included the bleakly lyrical Bailegangaire and Conversations on a Homecoming. Based upon The Golovlyov Family, a nineteenth century Russian novel that satirically portrays the effects of overwhelming greed, The Last Days of a Reluctant Tyrant blends together a complex myriad of influences in a powerful representation of the forces present within a decaying family. Directed by Conall Morrison, the play is due to run until 11th July, so don’t miss out on the chance to see the most recent offering from one of Ireland’s greatest living playwrights.
