Black Swan

We finally managed to head down to the cinema to check out Black Swan, which we’ve been looking forward to for ages. We’d heard it described as Fight Club meets Ballet Shoes, and we have to say, we definitely weren’t disappointed. Natalie Portman plays Nina, a newly-appointed principal dancer who begins to crack under the strain of playing the Swan Queen. As she struggles to embrace the duality of such a polarised role – that of the white and black swans – so her character becomes increasingly split as her body and mind become absorbed in an increasingly dark and terrifying series of hallucinations, which blur the edges of reality. Mila Kunis is excellent as Nina’s rival, Lily, but Natalie Portman easily steals the spotlight with her convincing portrayal of a prima ballerina. A disturbing, but mesmerising film.
