Maximalism

Wednesday saw the entire of Kambar being taken over for an evening of literary-based entertainment, as the main event to promote this year’s May Anthologies got underway. With a diverse array of performances by some of Cambridge’s finest student poets and bands, followed by a DJ set from ex-editor Pete Morelli, the night was a positive caravan of creative talent, emphasised by the artwork and poems that plastered the walls of the club and the silent films which underscored the readings and the music. The entries to the Mays Twitter poem competition were also on display; a series of poetic gems written in 140 characters or less. It was definitely one of the best nights of the year, and a welcome alternative to a typical night out – the relaxed atmosphere enhanced by the stall distributing creative writing journals, bowls of popcorn at the bar and the dim interior draped in bunting and strewn with flowers.
