Bookslam

Last Thursday saw the Tabernacle being taken over for Bookslam, which prides itself on being London’s only literary club night. Intrigued by what we might encounter, we headed along to Powis Square to see what the story was. It was far more laid back than we’d anticipated, but this was probably a good thing, given the fact that we’d exhausted ourselves wandering about the Ladbroke Grove/Notting Hill area in search of the right venue.

Andrea Levy was the star attraction at this month’s event, reading selections of her work to the assembled audience. Having never seen her ‘live’ before, her lyrical voice enhanced her vibrant prose, and certainly proved popular with the audience, who were crammed into the room, with the exception of the lucky few who had arrived early enough to stake out seats.  Also speaking was David Levithan, of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist fame, Roger Robinson, and Eska. Bookslam runs monthly, the next event falling on the 31st March, so if you’re of a literary disposition and haven’t had the opportunity to check it out yet, now’s your chance!
